An Ankle Sprain is a type of injury to the ankle joint usually caused by a twisting or wrenching motion. The ankle joint is made up of the bones at the back and sides of your lower leg. Pain in this area can occur following a blow or overuse (eg. sports injuries).

Ankle sprains are generally classified into three different types:

– Anterior: The foot turns inward and tears ligaments around the front of your ankle; these tears cause swelling along with pain; you would see this type if you caught your foot on anything sharp, such as a nail or branch while walking in woods.

– Posterior: The foot turns outward and tears ligaments around the back of your ankle; this tear causes swelling along with pain.

– Lateral: The ligaments on the outside of your ankle are torn.

Ankle Sprain Huntersville, NC This type is harder to diagnose because there is no pain in the area. However, you will often experience swelling and weakness in your ankle.

Pain is the most common symptom of a sprain and will usually be acute and sharp when you first injure your ankle. This pain usually lasts for a few days after your injury but will gradually subside. Any bruising or swelling should also subside after a couple of days, although the pain may continue in the background.

How to prevent ankle sprains?

You can prevent ankle sprains by warming up before running or exercising. Performing a series of stretches before you begin to move will help prepare your ankle for the activity.

Avoid shoes that are too tight, as this can cause a twisting motion, which can cause injury to your ankle ligaments; try to get footwear with a wide toe box for easier fit.
