Fungal toenails form due to a fungal infection called Onychomycosis. This condition is caused by abnormal colonies of fungi (most often dermatophytes) that invade the top layers of the nail plate, making a person more susceptible to severe trauma and pain.  The most common symptom is an itchy or burning sensation around your toenail. Left untreated for prolonged periods of time, these symptoms will worsen and can even become unbearable.

Symptoms of fungal toenails include:

  • Infected nails that grow unevenly and in spurts
  • Toenail discoloration or yellowing
  • A white, chalky spot at the nail base is called a white line or white spot that tends to crack on dry surfaces.  This symptom does not indicate an actual health problem but a sign that the tissue surrounding the nail has been damaged.  The flesh around this area becomes brittle and often breaks away from the nail. Secondary bacterial infection can take hold if left untreated.
