Athletes, or those frequently involved in sporting activities, are generally at a higher risk of getting a foot or ankle injury. This elevated risk is due to the increased wear and tear associated with prolonged exercise and the likelihood of a collision or other type of impact. It can be scary when you sustain an injury, especially if it doesn’t heal after a brief recovery time.
Overuse and intense pressure on the muscles and tendons can result in either strain injuries or sprains, depending on the area of injury. Unfortunately, in each case, athletes will be at a higher risk for further damage if they are not appropriately treated.
Sports in which ankle sprains commonly occur include basketball, football, soccer, tennis, and volleyball. Injuries can occur in sports that involve running if the athlete has an inadequate gait (footstrike) or is improperly fitted with footwear.
Most of these injuries can be prevented by making sure regular rest and recovery periods are adequately taken. However, sometimes an injury is inevitable, especially considering the physical nature of sporting events and the inherent risks that come with them. If you do sustain an injury, it is always recommended to visit a podiatrist.
